A good friend of mine, a folk dancer (and teacher) recently turned 80 years old! Instead of a big party, she chose to learn to “sing” the Torah portion. The word for this is cantillation, or “trope”. One chants according to little marks by the words. It’s quite a feat, and Ann did it so well! I attended the occasion at her synagogue, and not only did she trope – she also gave the “sermon” for the morning. I won’t go into details, but she brought tears to the eyes of everyone in the room. A wonderful lunch followed, but the service was the most important part, and Ann is an amazing woman. By the way, she also is a hand-writing analyst and appears often in court – what a gal! (I made her a special button, hope she liked it)
